VIRTUAL INSTRUCTION DAYS

When inclement weather impacts school operations, WCPS will communicate status updates promptly to families, staff, and the community through its standard notification channels (which can be found on our School Delays & Closings page).

When possible, advance notice will be provided to allow families and staff to prepare devices, materials, and schedules. In some cases, decisions may be made the morning of the weather event based on updated conditions.

Weather Status Designations

WCPS uses a color-coded system to communicate operational status:

YELLOW

• Schools open with a delayed opening or early dismissal
• Center for Education Services is open
• Staff reporting adjustments may apply

ORANGE

• Schools closed for students
• Center for Education Services is open
• Select staff report as directed

RED

• Schools and Center for Education Services are closed to students, staff, and the public
• Essential personnel report only if directed by the Superintendent or designee

VIRTUAL INSTRUCTION DAY

• Implemented only after all built-in makeup days have been used
• The Virtual Instruction Plan is in effect
• Students participate in four (4) hours of live, synchronous instruction

• Use your WCPS-issued device.  PK and K students may use a trusted parent guardian device or the WCPS device
• Log in to Google Classroom for assignments and Google Meet links
• WCPS has created a basic Chromebook troubleshooting guide for students and parents/guardians
• If a student encounters issues with their district-issued device during a virtual snow day, please call 1-888-377-SNOW (7669) or email

Attendance is required and will be recorded in Synergy.

Students With Internet Access

• Must join live Google Meet sessions
• Must participate for required time to be counted present
• Minimum four (4) hours of synchronous instruction provided

Students Without Internet Access

• Will be marked present upon submission of assigned work within the allowed timeframe

If your child is unable to attend due to illness, please follow your school’s regular attendance reporting procedures.

Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) staff do not report on Virtual Instruction Days unless otherwise directed.

Since Virtual Instruction Days are only implemented after makeup days are exhausted and due to severe weather conditions, traditional meal service will not occur on those days.

Families are encouraged to:
 

• Plan accordingly when severe weather is forecasted
• Monitor district communications for any updates regarding food distribution if conditions allow
